The present study aims to identify the effects of the educational and occupational difference between father and mother on the intergenerational dynamics (educational and occupational) and the probability of the individual belonging to the lower stratum of education and/or occupation. The study is based on information from the 2014 National Household Sample Survey. The article used parametric and non-parametric data processing tools. On the non-parametric side, Markov transition matrices were constructed in order to obtain mobility indicators and persistence measures by income and schooling level. On the parametric side, a bivariate probit model was estimated in order to obtain information about the determinants of mobility conditioned to parental characteristics, considering the educational and occupational level. The results suggest that the fact that the mother belongs to a higher stratum than the father promotes greater mobility, whether for education or occupation. It was observed that the higher the mother's education in relation to the father's, not only will the child be more educated, but the lower the probability of the child belonging to the lower stratum of education and/or occupation.
